Guinea has been declared Ebola free after more than 2,500 people died from the virus in the West African nation, leaving Liberia the only country still counting down for an end to the ruinous epidemic.
The declaration was made by World Health Organization (WHO) in a statement on Tuesday.
“Today the World Health Organization (WHO) declares the end of Ebola virus transmission in the Republic of Guinea,” the UN agency said in a statement.
People in the capital, Conakry, on Tuesday greeted the declaration by authorities and the UN World Health Organization with mixed emotions given the huge number of deaths, and the damage the virus did to the economy and the country's health and education sectors.
Guinea government and representatives of donor nations and NGOs are planning on holding an official ceremony to mark the declaration on Wednesday, where they will also be paying tribute to several people who have died in the cause of the epidemic.
