Ohaneze Ndi’Igbo rejects National Grazing Bill

The apex body of all Igbo socio-cultural organisations, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, yesterday rejected the proposed National Grazing Bill before the National Assembly.

The inner caucus (Imeobi) of the organisation, after their meeting held at the National Secretariat of the Ohaneze Ndigbo, in Enugu, ratified the decision as that of the Igbo race.

In a Four-point communiqué read by the President-General, Professor Enwo Igariwey, the Ohaneze Ndigbo leadership described issues pertaining to cattle rearing as a private business which should not be allowed to infringe on the rights of individuals and communities.

The communiqué reads “Imeobi Ohaneze endorses and reaffirms the position of Ohaneze on the proposed grazing bill at the National Assembly. This bill is rejected by Ohaneze.

The Ohaneze Ndigbo leadership maintains that cattle rearing is a private business and therefore should not be allowed to infringe on the rights of individuals and communities”.

The Ohaneze Ndigbo also condemned the recent mayhem unleashed in Ukpabi Nimbo community, Uzo Uwani council area of Enugu State by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The group condemned the security lapses that paved the way for the carnage while calling on both the Federal Government and Enugu State government to carry out a thorough investigation, aimed at unravelling the perpetrators, for them to face the wrath of the law.

Part of the communiqué further reads,”Imeobi Ohaneze expresses disappointment at the obvious security lapses which allowed the heinous act to be committed in Nimbo community. Imeobi Ohaneze therefore calls on the Enugu State government and the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure that a thorough investigation is carried out with a view to ensuring that those responsible for the lapses are punished for their action”.

The caucus mandated Ohaneze Ndigbo, as a parent body of all Igbo socio-cultural organisations, to take necessary actions in ensuring that the ugly experience of suspected Fulani herdsmen’s attack on Nimbo community does not repeat itself in any community in the South East zone and the rest of the country.
