More women are opting to forgo chemicals and go natural, they are beginning to accept themselves and their kind of hair. Gone are the days were black women are ashamed of walking about with their natural hair
When I had my big chop some months back people gave me the searing 'side eye' like are you crazy girl, why would you do that to your hair you had such fine and long hair, hey honey nothing can be as fine as my natural hair that was always my response.
What is surprising to me is that people (blacks) call going back to our roots (accepting our natural hair) as Trending. Are you for real? What better thing than to tell everyone that I love my hair, I am proud of my roots, it's not Trending it's me accepting my afro, kinky, curly hair. The good thing is even though we still have those that can't stand the natural hair because it's local or doesn't fit the boardroom setting, more black women are switching over and it is shown in the increase in sales of styling products like ecostyler gel, perm rod etc
Ways of being Natural:
You either go straight to the big chop that's cutting off all the relaxed part, we call it the BIG CHOP(BC) then start afresh.
But if you are wondering how you will look like with all your hair gone you can TRANSITION. You will stop adding relaxer (chemicals) to your hair for a long period and trim off the relaxed part bit by bit once in a while till all the relaxed part is out. So, you can go natural either by having your BC or by TRANSITIONING.
There is this popular believe that is attached to natural hair, oh natural hair is so difficult to maintain, it's hard, it's this it's that. Natural hair is one of the easiest thing to handle once you know your hair type. I can comb my hair easy just by adding water.
As a nappy girl there are some essential things you must have.
It's fun being natural.
