Favourite Nigerian Street Food...

They are very affordable but also very tasty and handy. These street foods are widely common and can be found in almost every nook and cranny of any city you find yourself though some are seasonal.

Roasted Corn with Coconut/pear(ube)

Corn is a seasonal food in Nigeria but usually make huge sales once it is available. A lot of women will be found on the roadside and streets filling the atmosphere with the tingling smell of roasted corn and a line of customers waiting to pick up the readily available ones. Munching roasted corn along with coconut or pear is one of the best combinations that cannot be explained except you try it out yourself.

Roasted Plantain with Groundnut

Roasted plantain with groundnut locally called “boli and epa” is also one of the most sought after street food. The plantain is usually ripe, fairly ripe or overly ripe depending on the customers’ preference. Though some consume it without groundnut, the combination of roasted plantain with groundnut is usually fantabulous.

Roasted Yam with Sauce

The yam is usually roasted with the bark then peeled once bought, spreading the very delicious sauce that has a lot of spices and assortments on it. It is usually best consumed while it’s still hot and sizzling and the roasted yam has soaked a bit of the sauce. You can also eat roasted plantain with sauce.

Fried Yam with Beans Cake

Locally called “dundun and akara”, the beans cake is made from a combination of fine blended beans, onions and pepper deeply fried in round shapes. The beans cake serves as the compliment to the fried yam so it’s not so dry and plain while eating.

Dried Grilled Meat (Suya)

Suya is mostly sold at night by the roadside. You cannot pass by a suya spot without looking twice at the shimmering meat on the grill puffing out nice aroma enough to make a stomach groan. It is usually diced then seasoned by a special mix of peppers and spices together with onions. You cannot stop at one bite.

Abacha

Made from dried cassava shaft, this is another food that has won the hearts of many especially when spiced with ugba, fish and some other special edible leaves that makes it taste delicious. It is usually hawked by women especially in market places.

We also have:
Okpa
