Asylum seeker threatened with deportation because 'he can't prove he's gay'

An asylum seeker is being threatened with deportation to a country where homosexuality is illegal after immigration officials denied him the right to stay in the UK because he "failed to prove" he was gay.

Robert Kityo, who lives in Manchester, fears he will be killed if he is sent back to Uganda. "I'm a gay man," he said. "It isn't safe to be a gay man in Uganda."

A decision letter sent by officials acting on behalf of the Home Secretary, Theresa May, said: "It is not accepted that you are a homosexual and an openly gay man."

The decision came despite letters of support from more than 30 people including Dr David Walker, the Bishop of Manchester.
